For example, Tornado Man's stage has spinning magnetic platforms, wind that slightly impairs jumps, the occasional icy floor, and several weather-based enemies that fit right in. Each one utilizes different mechanics and enemies that get progressively more difficult as the stages progress. There wasn't a single time that I died during these stages that felt cheap or unfair. The level design in the robot masters' stages is not only the best in the series, but some of the best level design I've ever seen in a video game period. Plus this game features the first female robot master, Splash Woman, which is pretty neat. Each has their own color scheme, which makes them pop out on the level select screen. Moving on to the robot masters, they're by far the most creative and best designed thus far. 4 is the only game to get the balance between the charge shot and the weapon quality just right. I feel that, post-Mega Man 4, it ended up making the weapons feel useless. Also, perhaps this is an unpopular opinion, but I never cared for the charge shot. I understand some will take fault with that but personally, I got over the loss of the slide ability as the levels and bosses are designed in a way where it wouldn't have seen much use anyways. This is because Mega Man 9 aims to design itself in Mega Man 2's image. Like I mean really to its roots, this game disregards the slide and charge shot that became staples of the franchise up until this point. Mega Man 7 made some missteps in this formula and Mega Man 8 screwed it up royally, but Mega Man 9 has brough the series back to its roots. Classic Mega Man utilizes a simple formula: beat 8 robot master stages, gain each robot master's weapon, use those weapons on certain bosses to make fighting them easier, proceed to the fortress stages which consist of 3-4 levels, fight a boss rush, and then fight a usually multi-phase Wily battle.
